My friend and I decided to start a business without any experience.  We stepped into it knowing that it would be more educational than profitable, but we still had our hopes.  While he was fresh out of an M.B.A. program from UCSD and taking care of the business side of the concept, I was entirely self-taught in web development and would be the only actor responsible for the products we were creating.

Many mistakes were made.

Many lessons were learned.

We had the opportunity to take on several projects.  It was interesting to have to deal with other business’ decision making processes.

My partner was very capable of getting the attention of different brand managers and seeing if they had any projects with web development needs.

For the original website I focused on responsiveness and a sleek look for the form. I enjoyed getting creative with how content would shift at different screen sizes. Content that is part of the hero image will displayed below it at different screen sizes. Even the text shifts to better display the logo as the screen width changes.

The form was a bit harder. Properly targeting auto fill rules and styles was more complicated than I expected, but it was good to see how they can be changed to keep the look across your site rather than accepting that forms will conflict with the style.

I started out making custom themes for each and every project.  It was certainly the best route for me to be learning about web development and development within WordPress, but that was because I didn’t know enough to know what I didn’t know.  I started using professional themes on the genesis framework.  This allowed me to streamline my design process and create strong finished products for our “budget” clients.

For the revision of our site, I decided to go with a premium theme and rework the back end as needed. I really enjoy working with PHP and writing my own CSS, but there wasn’t much work needed for this solution straight out of the box. I’m sure as I explore it more I will find things that I want to change. It will be interesting to see how this site becomes reshaped over the next several years.

While I have been taking on projects and gigs on my own, it was a great experience to work with someone else and better understand the business and marketing challenges that studios face.
